23 Sep The harvest of Bizkaiko Txakolina will begin this Friday

Leioa 09-08-2020 The 2020 harvest of Bizkaiko Txakolina will officially begin this Friday, September 11, two weeks ahead of the usual calendar, due to the good ripening conditions that the vineyards present after a spring and a summer with a very favorable weather.

The first calculations foresee that the 2020 harvest will be slightly higher than last year, in which 2,279,000 kilos of grapes were harvested. In this sense, it must be remembered that, due to Covid-19, the Regulatory Council has reduced the maximum yield per hectare to 11,500 kilos for this year, instead of the 13,000 kilos indicated in the D.O. The harvest will take place for approximately one month following the Prevention Protocol against Covid-19 developed by the Regulatory Council in accordance with the general guidelines set by the Department of Economic Development and Infrastructures, the Department of Health of the Basque Government, Osakidetza and Osalan and on which both the Regulatory Council and all the wineries of the DO have already been working for a few weeks.

In compliance with this protocol, all the people who participate in the harvesting tasks must undergo PCR tests at the OSIs of Barrualde-Galdakao, Bilbao-Basurto, Ezkerraldea-Enkarterri-Cruces, and Uribe, which cover the different geographical locations of the wineries of the DO. In addition to the PCR tests, the protocol against Covid-19 includes a series of measures that must be complied with both in the work in the vineyard and in the winery.

Workers will pay special attention to maintaining interpersonal distance at all times, reinforcing the use of the mask, as well as organizing in small work groups.

The use of gloves and frequent hand washing with water, soap and hydroalcoholic gels are also mandatory.

The participants in the harvest will always use the same PPE and work material, such as scissors, from the beginning to the end of the tasks, without exchanging tools between colleagues. If it is essential to share material, it will be properly disinfected, the same as the vehicles used both for transport and for work.
