25 Apr Bizkaiko Txakolina celebrated the Bizkaiko Txakolinaren Eguna for its 25th anniversary

Leioa 12-04-19. The Bizkaiko Txakolina Designation of Origin celebrated yesterday its traditional Bizkaiko Txakolinaren Eguna, the party in which it presents the new vintage of the wine in society. The appointment of this year also meant the start of the commemorative events of the 25th anniversary of the DO.

Patxi Zabala, member of the Association of Sommeliers of Bizkaia and the Tasting Committee of Bizkaiko Txakolina since its foundation, was in charge of tasting the new txakoli and explaining its characteristics to those attending the party. After referring to the climatic ups and downs experienced by the vineyards over the past year, which limited the harvest in quantity but allowed a very good maturation, he concluded that the Bizkaiko Txakolina of 2018 is “a great wine”. Regarding its organoleptic characteristics, he described the wine as a “straw yellow color wine with greenish reflections, brilliant. With an intense aroma of white fruits such as pippin apple, and with a balsamic background reminiscent of fennel. The palate is fresh, with citrus notes, fruity, the sensations of green apple are repeated, it is complex, with body, but above all it is long, the pleasant notes lengthen”, he explained.

Before proceeding to the presentation of the new txakoli of Bizkaia, the president of the Regulatory Council, Jose Luis Gomez Querejeta, addressed the audience to remember the evolution that txakoli has experienced in the quarter of a century of existence of the DO, a period which has gone “from being little more than a wine with more folkloric connotations than anything else, to be a valued wine, very well prepared and with enough quality to compete in the most demanding markets”.

Gomez Querejeta wanted to highlight the important help and collaboration that the DO has received from many well-known people of the society of Bizkaia, who have lent their image to act as ambassadors for txakoli, as well as Laboral Kutxa, the financial institution of reference for the DO throughout its history.

He also highlighted the support that has come from the Administration, both the Basque Government and the Deputation of Bizkaia, and the City Councils that, year after year, include Bizkaiko Txakolina in their parties and fairs.

AN APPLICATION TO FIND TXAKOLI

Jose Luis Gomez Querejeta announced the launch of an application, “Txakoli map”, a webapp that geolocalises points of sale of Bizkaiko Txakolina and provides us with information on the premises, the txakolis of Bizkaiko Txakolina that we can taste in them, as well as the suggestions of pairings.

This new commitment to technological innovation and digital content will be put into operation next May and the Regulatory Council trusts that it will be a success both among consumers and in the world of gastronomy.
